Hardball Retrospective – Misc. Transaction Types – Average Yearly WAR and Win Shares

Based on my research for Hardball Retrospective, the following table reveals the average and total Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Win Shares (WS) for miscellaneous transaction types for every franchise based on the players that were acquired and signed to their first professional Major League Baseball contract. Each player’s statistics are mapped to the appropriate franchise for the duration of their career. Therefore Babe Ruth’s career WAR and WS are included in the Red Sox (BOS) franchise totals for the Purchase (P) transaction type. Other examples – Joe DiMaggio (NYY) via Trade (T) from San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League, Harmon Killebrew (MIN) as an Fb (amateur free agent “bonus baby” signing under 1953-57 rule requiring player to stay on ML roster) and Shohei Ohtani (ANA) as an Fo (free agent signing with first ML team).

Statistics through the 2019 season. Defunct franchises are omitted from the results.

Average Yearly WAR and Win Shares for "Original" Players for players acquired and signed to their first Major League contract through miscellaneous transactions (defined as any transaction besides Amateur Draft or Amateur Free Agent signings) by each franchise - statistics compiled over the duration of their careers. For example, Babe Ruth's career WAR and Win Shares are included in the BOS_P totals.

Fb = amateur free agent "bonus baby" signing under 1953-57 rule requiring player to stay on ML roster
Fo = free agent signing with first ML team
J = jumped teams
M = obtained rights when entering into working agreement with minor league team

T = trade (generally w/ minor league or independent team)
U = unknown
Un = unlisted transaction
